O'Grady lived in the city of Wheaton, Illinois and graduated from the North High School of Wheaton in 1981. She is the daughter of Jan O'Grady (a finance planner) as well as Jim O'Grady. She grew up in Wheaton, Illinois, and completed her studies at Wheaton North High school in 1981. Prior to moving into Los Angeles, she appeared in a variety of commercials. O'Grady's career began as a model and commercial actress for Montgomery Ward. She began her career on the screen with the romantic drama She's Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a regular role in the ABC drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. She also guest starred in a variety of other shows and appeared in made for TV and independent films. Donna Abandando played her first principal role on ABC's NYPD Blue the police drama. O'Grady was the large-haired squad secretary between 1993 and 1996, and for each year received the Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in the Drama Series. The entire cast as well as O'Grady won an award from the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance by a Drama Series Ensemble for 1995.
